Ask a floor team what actually goes wrong with bill folders and they will not mention the leather.

What happens without a slot

The guest puts the card on top of the receipt and closes the folder. The server picks it up at an angle, the card slides, and one of three things happens: it gets wedged in the fold, it slips out onto the floor between the table and the till, or the guest never put it in properly and it is still on the table.

All three cost time in the middle of service and one of them costs a guest their afternoon.

What a slot changes

The card is in a known place. A server can confirm it is there with a glance rather than opening the folder flat in front of the table, which is both faster and better manners.

It also means the card and the paper are physically separate, so nobody is sorting plastic out of receipts at the terminal.

Keep the receipt pockets separate too

Merchant copy and customer copy in one pocket is a small mess that repeats every transaction. Two pockets costs one more seam.

On hotel folios the same logic extends further — the invoice, the card and the key card each want their own place, because all three are coming back across the desk at once.

The rest of the small stuff

A pen loop keeps the pen at the table. Corner pockets hold the paper without an elastic band that will perish and mark the cover. Reinforced corners survive being dropped on a hard floor, which will happen.

None of these is expensive. All of them are decided before the folder is cut, which is why they belong on the quote rather than in a complaint.
